Zack Snyder says his love of the character of Superman made him want to take on Man of Steel.
Snyder is back in the director's chair this week as Superman returns to the big screen for the first time in seven years.
And while Snyder has always been a huge fan of the character the script took him on an interesting journey.
Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "I’m a big fan of the character anyway, so I can’t say that when the opportunity came I wasn’t hesitant, because of my love of the character, but it was one of those things where I was like, 'Gosh, if I don’t do this someone will.'
"So then it’s like reverse responsibility (laughs). It’s like, 'Argghh, dang it. You got me!'
Then reading the story, without breaking the canon, without taking away the things that make him Superman, they were able to make him totally relatable. They took me on a journey that was interesting to me, and that was the reason to do it."
Man of Steel is one of the most anticipated films of the year as the franchise is given a reboot by the director.
This is the first film for Snyder since he helmed Sucker Punch - he has also been behind 300 and Watchmen.
Man of Steel may not have been released yet but it seems that a sequel is already in the pipeline.
Man of Steel is released 14th June.
