Poulter is set to take on the role of Ortega in the American war comedy, which sees him star alongside Brad Pitt for the first time.

The movie is based on the non-fiction book The Operators by Michael Hastings and sees David Michôd back in the director's chair.

Poulter is currently promoting his new film Kids in Love but talked to Digital Spy about War Machine. He said: "I play a US marine in the film. I'm a small part of what I'd supposed you'd say is a big production.

"Brad Pitt is phenomenal in it, I got the opportunity to do several scenes with him, which was incredible, and to play a US Marine was one of the greatest honours, and most life-changing experiences I've ever had - the training, the research and the practice of that was a massive privilege, it's changed me long term I think."

War Machine is only the second live-action feature film of Michôd's career and comes after success with Animal Kingdom and The Rover. As well as being in the director's chair, Michôd has also adapted Hastings' book into a screenplay.

Pitt is set to take on the central role of Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal while Emory Cohen, Tilda Swinton, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Ben Kingsley, and Scoot McNairy are also on the cast list.

War Mchine is set to be distributed by Netflix in what is one of their biggest movie projects to date.

As for Poulter, he is back on the big screen with Kids in Love, which is his first feature film since the success of The Revenant at the beginning of the year.

The actor is currently filming an untitled Detroit project with filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow and actor Jack Reynor.
