Wally Pfister says that it was the husband and wife relationship in Transcendence that really drew him to the project.
Pfister - who is best known for his cinematography work - makes the leap into the director’s chair this spring with the highly anticipated sci-fi film Transcendence.
And while the movie may be a big-budget project about the advancement in technology, it was the human story at its heart that was the real draw for the first time filmmaker.
Speaking to Empire, the director said: “The material spoke to me immediately, mostly in its emotional content. What was most important to me was this relationship between this husband and wife.
“And then the fun, technological conversation and the fact it’s very much in the zeitgeist - to overuse an overused word - in what’s going on today and the ethics of the technological revolution.
“I really didn’t expect to be doing a large-budget science fiction movie for my first movie. But I thought it was fascinating.”
Pfister has assembled a fantastic cast for the film, as Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy and Kate Mara are all on board; Depp and Hall will play married couple Will and Evelyn in the film.
Jack Paglen has penned the screenplay for the film, in what is his first feature film script to be made into a film.
Transcendence is released 25th April.
