An unlikely love affair blossoms in the Dutch countryside when Kaiser Wilhelm II’s (Plummer) lavish exile turns into something wholly unexpected, whilst a dangerous spy mission takes place, all with the backdrop of the Second World War.
Nazi captain Stefan Brandt (Courtney) is sent to investigate a threat within the exile, and when he arrives at the secluded mansion he realises that local resistance and British Intelligence are making moves against the deposed German monarch.
Infiltrating the lives of the Kaiser in the hopes of finding clues, he instead finds love with Mieke (James); one of the maids working in the mansion.
Janet McTeer, Ben Daniels and Eddie Marsan all also star in the film, brought to the screen by theatre director David Leveaux.
The Exception comes to UK cinemas and digital platforms on September 29, with a DVD release set for October 2.
