The Brad Bird-directed sci-fi movie - which features George Clooney - was released last month, but has fallen dramatically short of the studio's expectations, proving to be a real flop at the box office.

Thus far, the movie has taken $170 million worldwide, despite costing $180 million to make, with a further $150 million spent on marketing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This comes shortly after Brad Bird admitted said he was determined his movie would send over a positive message to cinemagoers.

He explained: "Disney's message is always about trying to make the world a better place and that's really what we wanted to do with this movie - Walt Disney had a vision of the future where science wasn't the enemy.

"I think that Walt lived in a time which was just as turbulent as the time we live in now, if not more so."

The director also insisted he didn't pay much attention to other sci-fi movies and their themes.

He shared: "Making this movie was about what we could do as opposed to what everybody else could do."
