Timothy Spall has described Turner as a 'most unusual man'.
Spall is set to return to the big screen later this year, as he takes on the role of painter J.M.W. Turner in Mr Turner.
The movie sees Spall team up with director and writer Mike Leigh, as the movie explores the final twenty five years of his life.
Speaking to The Time newspaper, the actor said: "Turner was not the marrying kind. He liked women for comfort and sex.
"He was a most unusual man; the last person, if you met him in the street, that you could imagine becoming one of the greatest artists we have ever known."
Mr Turner premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month, where it was met with critical acclaim.
Spall went on to win the Best Actor gong at the festival, and the film is now being tipped as a possible awards contender.
Mr Turner is released 31st October.
