Many movies set to be released this year are large-scale blockbusters, such as Morbius and The Lost City; but what about the smaller, independent films?
Yesterday (March 1st, 2022), theatrical distributor and global film streaming service, MUBI, released the brand new UK trailer, as well as the poster, for Joachim Trier’s intriguing new film, The Worst Person in the World.
The feature has been nominated for not only an Academy Award, but also a BAFTA; the movie will release later this month (March, 2022) into UK cinemas, and will debut on MUBI in May of this year (2022).
The Worst Person in the World is the third entry into Trier’s Oslo trilogy, coming after both Reprise from 2006, and Oslo, 31 August from 2011.
Trier’s upcoming film stars up and coming Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve (Oslo, 31 August, The Orheim Company), as well as Anders Danielsen Lie (Bergman Island, Reprise, 22 July) and Herbert Nordrum (Women in Oversized Men's Shirts).
The movie debuted in a contest at 2021’s Canne’s Film Festival, with Reinsve winning the Best Actress award; since then, The Worst Person in the World has been nominated for Best International Feature Film as well as Original Screenplay at the 94th Academy Awards; it has also been nominated for two BAFTA Awards, which were: Film Not In The English Language, and Leading Actress (Reinsve).
The Worst Person in the World centres around Julie (Reinsve), a bright and excitable young woman who, close to turning 30 years old, faces a myriad of decisions that force her re-invent herself over and over again.
She must constantly chase after new things in her life, as well as becoming a brand new person at every turn.
Over the course of a few years, Julie traverses multiple love affairs, crippling uncertainty, and the meltdown of her career, as she slowly but surely settles on a choice about what she wishes to do, who she wants to be, and who she needs to become.
The Worst Person in the World will be in UK and Irish cinemas on March 25th, 2022, before coming to MUBI on May 13th, 2022.
