The Wolverine has claimed the top spot at the UK box office, bringing the reign of Monsters University to a close.

The Wolverine sees Hugh Jackman return to the title role in what is the second stand alone movie for this popular character.

The film has already topped the U.S. box office, and now it is the #1 film in the UK having grossed $4.6 million in its opening weekend.

Monsters University fell just a single place as it took a further £3.1 million. The movie has been one of the big hits of the summer as it has taken over $577 million at the global box office.

There was no move for Despicable Me 2 as it remained at three, but The World's End was down two at four.

Now You See Me was the second none mover inside the top five as it stayed put at five.

Pacific Rim two places to six, while comedy the Internship clung onto seventh. World War Z was also down two at eight.

Frances Ha was the second and final new entry inside the top ten this week at it opened at number nine.

Man of Steel rounded off the top ten after a two place drop from last week's eight. The movie has far taken over $644 million worldwide since release.
