The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water has ended American Sniper's reign at the top of the U.S. box office as it stormed to the number one spot this weekend.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is the latest movie from the popular cartoon character, and the popularity shone through as it took $56 million in its opening weekend.

American Sniper slipped just one place to number two and will battle it out for a string of Oscars in just a couple of weeks. While the movie has caused some controversy, it continues to perform well and has grossed in excess of $361 million worldwide.

Jupiter Ascending is the latest offering from directors Andy and Lana Wachowski, and it opened at number three this week. This is their first film since Cloud Atlas back at the beginning of 2013, and sees them team up with Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis for the first time.

Seventh Son - which is an adaptation of the book The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney - was the third and final new entry at four.

Paddington was down two places this week from three to five, while Project Almanac was down four spots from two to six.

The Imitation Game was the only non-mover inside the top ten this week at seven, while The Wedding Ringer was down two at eight. Black or White was the other four place faller, as it was down from four to nine this week.

However, it was The Boy Next Door - which is the latest film from Jennifer Lopez - that was this week's biggest faller. The movie was down five places from five to this week's number ten.
