There are many remakes and reboots releasing all the time, for example this year (2022) will see Death on the Nile, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Batman hit cinemas; all of which have been adapted from other films. Now, a remake of The Raid is on its way.
The production for The Raid (sometimes called The Raid: Redemption) is marching on at Netflix as director of the original movie, Patrick Hughes, and producers Michael Bay and Gareth Evans, work on the forthcoming reboot.
The Raid is a now-classic Indonesian action movie that was released in 2011, and starred Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, and Yayan Ruhian; it is known for its quick action and amazing fight sequences that involve a martial art style known as Pencak Silat.
Evans also helmed The Raid II, which released in 2014 and received similar reviews to its previous film; a third movie was spoken about, but never came to fruition.
Hughes has a rather impressive roster when it comes to the films he has directed; his (US) debut was in 2014 with The Expendables 3, then came The Hitman's Bodyguard, and then the sequel, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard.
At the moment, Hughes is currently finishing his work on The Man From Toronto, which stars Kevin Hart (Ride Along, Central Intelligence) and Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, Now You See Me), which is set to be a brilliant action-comedy slated for a 2022 release date.
Bay is of course well-known for the Transformers franchise, as well as movies such as Bad Boys and Armageddon. It will be brilliant to see Hughes and Bay’s talents combine for The Raid’s remake.
Recently (via Deadline), news has surfaced that a “reimagining” of The Raid is on its way, and is set to debut on Netflix. The feature has been in the pipeline, with various filmmakers working on it, for a while, but is now in the more than capable hands of Netflix, with Evans and Bay at the helm.
It has been said that the reboot will take place in the US, more specifically in “Philadelphia’s drug-invested ‘Badlands’”, in which "an elite undercover DEA task force climb a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin." It's a similar plot to the original, but with a new setting and agency at the forefront.
Here's what the producers had to say about the new take:
“We’re incredibly excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film. It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre.”
With Hughes, Evans and Bay all working on a remake of The Raid, there is no doubt that it will be one to watch, whenever more information about casting and, of course, a release date is revealed.
