Jason Statham and Li Bingbing come together to lead upcoming sci-fi action thriller The Meg, with National Treasure filmmaker Jon Turteltaub returning to the director’s chair to tell a story like none we’ve seen before. This week, a brilliant trailer and poster have been released for the film, which you can check out below, as well as finding out a little bit more about the thought-to-be-extinct creature at the centre of the action:
As part of an international observation program under the sea, a deep-sea submersible finds themselves attacked by a massive creature known as the Megalodon. The prehistoric 75-foot-long shark leaves the team trapped in their vessel, disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench the Pacific Ocean has to offer.
Statham plays expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor; a man recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao) despite the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Bingbing). As a man who has already encountered the Megalodon, Taylor must work with his team to confront his fears and risk his own life to save all of those trapped beneath the surface.
Fellow cast members include Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Sophia Shuya Cai, Masi Oka and Cliff Curtis.
Based on the best-selling novel by Steve Alten, the screenplay comes from Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber, with Belle Avery Colin Wilson and Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing the film. Gerald R. Molen, Wei Jang, Randy Greenberg, and Barrie Osborne serve as executive producers on the movie, with Jie Chen, Ming Beaver Kwei and Chunzi Wang as associate producers.
The Meg comes to cinemas across the UK on August 10, 2018.
