The Imitation Game taught Keira Knightley more about the issues women faced during that time.

Knightley will be back on the big screen next month when she takes on the role of Joan Clarke - who helped crack the Enigma code - in The Imitation Game.

And Knightley says that while Clarke did the same job as the men that she worked with, there was not equality in the workplace.

Speaking to the Daily Mail the actress said:

"Even though she did get into the room with the boys, and do the job she was hired to do, she never got anywhere near the same pay as any of the guys.

"They had to lie and say she was a linguist to get her more money - even though she spoke no other languages."

The Imitation Game sees Knightley reunite with actor Benedict Cumberbatch for the first time since Atonement back in 2007; he will take on the central role of mathematician Alan Turing in the film.

Knightley and Cumbatch are joined on the cast list by Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Charles Dance, Allen Leech, Rory Kinnear and Matthew Beard, as they all tell this incredible true story.

It has already been a busy year for Knightley with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Begin Again both hitting the big screen.

The Imitation Game is just one of two movies that we will be seeing her in this November, as she is set to team up with Chloe Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell for romantic comedy Say When.

Knightley has also completed work on Everest, which will see her work with director Baltasar Kormakur for the first time.

The Imitation Game is released 14th November.
