Mockingjay _ Part 1 sees Francis Lawrence in the director's chair and is a film that successfully builds up to what promises to be an epic conclusion new year.

The film took a further $21,6 million to hold on to the top spot and hold off the challenge from animation film Penguins of Madagascar. So far, the third Hunger Games movie has grossed in excess of $560 million at the global box office.

After just three weeks on release, the movie is already the tenth highest grossing film of 2014, and is closing in on the likes of Interstellar and How To Train Your Dragon 2 at nine and eight.

Penguins of Madagascar was also a none-mover at two, while Horrible Bosses 2 was up two places this weekend from five to three - it was the only film on the up on the chart this week.

Big Hero 6 - which isn't release in the UK until January - was down one at four, while Interstellar also fell one this week to round off the top five.

Dumb and Dumber To, The Theory of Everything, and Gone Girl were also stayed put at six and seven and eight.

Horror movie The Pyramid was the only new entry inside the top ten this week, as it opened at number nine. Grégory Levasseur made his feature film directorial debut with the film - however, he is no stranger to the horror genre having penned screenplays for The Hills Have Eyes and Mirrors.

Oscar favourite Birdman fell a single place from nine to ten this week, however, it still continues to earn the praise of critics. The movie is expected to be in the Best Picture race when the nominations are announced at the beginning of next year.
