The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has made it three weeks at the top of the U.S box office, as it held off the challenge from new musical Into The Woods.

The Battle of the Five Armies took a further $21.9 million to keep the number one spot, and has now taken in excess of $722 million at the global box office since its release in December.

Into The Woods was a non mover at two as the musical continues to perform well at the U.S. box office. The film is based on the Tony Award winning Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim, and sees Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp, and Chris Pine all on the cast list.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death is the highest new entry this week at four, while Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb was down one to found off the top five.

Annie fell out of the top five as it dropped one place to six, while The Imitation Game was up one place from eight to seven - the biopic was the first of two movies on the up this week.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 was down two at eight and has so far grossed over $695 million at the worldwide box office. It is currently the second most successful film in the franchise to date.

The Gambler was down two from seven to nine, while Big Hero 6 rounded off the top ten. The latest Disney film was the second movie on the up as jumped up a single place from last week's number eleven.
