The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as debuted at the top of the UK box office after its first weekend on release.

The Desolation of Smaug is the second of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films, and continues Bilbo and co's journey to reclaim Ereborn.

The movie took over £9.3 million to comfortably topple Frozen from the top spot.

Frozen fell just a single place as it took a further £4.2 million this weekend.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire continues to perform strongly around the world, and slipped just one place to three this week.

There were also one place drops for Gravity and Saving Mr Banks as they rounded off the top five.

Falstaff - Met Opera 2013 was the second and final new entry insdie the top ten this week as it opened at number six.

Homefront and Free Birds were both down two places at seven and eight, while The Butler was down one at eight.

Carrie was this week's biggest faller as it dropped three places from seven to ten.
