The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has stormed to the top of the UK box office as it took over £9.7 million in its opening weekend on release.

The Battle of the Five Armies is the third film in Peter Jackson’ The Hobbit trilogy and will the sixth time that the director has taken us to Middle Earth in just over a decade. The movie, which is one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year, has toppled Paddington to take the top spot in the UK.

Martin Freeman was back as Bilbo Baggins, while Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Lee Pace, and Benedict Cumberbatch are just some of the actors that have reprised their roles for this final film.

Former number one Paddington fell just a single place to number two this week, while The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 was also down one place at three. Paddington has now grossed over £10 million at the UK box office, while Mockingjay - Part 1 has taken over $612 million worldwide in just a few weeks.

Penguins of Madagascar and The Imitation Game were also one-place fallers as they were down at four and five this week. It has been a great week for Benedict Cumberbatch as he picked up a Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his central role as Alan Turing in the World War II drama.

Get Santa was the only film on the up this week as it jumped a single place from seven to six, while Tinkerbell and the Legend of the NeverBeast was the second and final new entry inside the top ten at seven. Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey? Was the only none-mover as it stayed put at eight.
