The Amazing Spider Man has topped the U.S. box office as it comfortably toppled Ted from the #1 spot.

The movie sees the Spider Man franchise given a re-boot with Marc Webb in the director's chair and Andrew Garfield taking on the central role of Peter Parker.

The movie took $65 million in it's opening weekend to sweep all competition aside and claim the top spot.

Seth MacFarlane's comedy Ted fell just a single place to number two after a week in the top spot while there was no move for Pixar's Brave at three.

Oliver Stone's latest movie Savages was the second new entry inside the top five as it opened at number four.

Stone has brought together  a cast that mixes the young talent of Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson and Blake Lively with the experience of Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek.

Magic Mike dropped three places this week as it rounded off the top five.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted were both down two as they finished the weekend outside the top five at six and seven.

Katy Perry: Part Of Me was the third and final new entry inside the top ten this week as her new documentary opened at number eight.

Moonrise Kingdom was down two at nine while Woody Allen's latest movie To Rome With Love was up seven places to number ten.
