It was back in 1982 when we were introduced to the character of John Rambo for the first time in First Blood. Over the years, we have seen Stallone reprise this role on three other occasions.

The last time came in 2008 with Rambo and while there have been rumours of a fifth, the actor says that he body can no longer take it.

Speaking to Variety, Stallone said: "The heart's willing, but the body says, 'Stay home!' It's like fighters that go back for one last round and get clobbered. Leave it to someone else."

We may see another actor take over the role of Rambo going forward, but it looks like Stallone is leaving this character behind for good.

However, a character that he is not leaving behind is Rocky Balboa, as he is set to reprise this iconic role in Creed.

We will not be seeing Stallone fighting in the ring as in previous films, as he mentors and trains Adonis Johnson - son of Apollo Creed - this time around.

This is the first time that we have seen Stallone play Rocky since the release of Rocky Balboa back in 2006. The movie sees the actor team up with filmmaker Ryan Coogler for the first time, while Michael B. Jordan takes on the role of Adonis.

Creed has been winning over critics and audiences and Stallone has picked up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The ceremony is this weekend and sees the actor nominated alongside Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, Michael Shannon, and Paul Dano for Beasts of No Nation, Bridge of Spies, 99 Homes, and Love & Mercy.

Creed is released 15th January.
