Steven Soderbergh has revealed that he did not what his new movie Behind The Candelabra to compete at the Cannes Film Festival.
The director's final movie will battle it out for the prestigious Palme d'Or despite the fact that Soderbergh at first turned down a spot in competition.
Soderbergh says that he just wanted to have fun at the festival this year and didn't want the pressure that an in competition film brings.
However he was talked into having the film featured Thierry Fremaux, festival chief, and it will now do battle with the likes of Only God Forgives, and Inside Llewyn Davis.
Speaking to the Press Association the director said: "The prism through which a movie is viewed when it's in competition is very different than when it's not in competition.
"And I wanted to have fun. I didn't want to feel that pressure. But I don't really care now. I'm going to have fun no matter what, I've decided."
Soderbergh reunites with actors Michael Douglas and Matt Damon for the film which looks at the relationship between Liberace and his much younger lover Scott Thorson.
The movie is based on the book written by Thorson about the relationship between the pair.
Behind The Candelabra is released 7th June.
