Steve Carell says that working on Foxcatcher was quite dark, but that tone was necessary to tell the story as true as they possibly could.

Carell teams up with Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo to tell the story of John du Pont and his relationship with wrestling brothers Mark and Dave Schultz - a relationship that ended in tragedy.

The actor also revealed that Mark and Dave's widow were on set during the filming and everyone felt a huge amount of responsibility to get their performances as real as they could.

Speaking to Collider, the actor said: "I feel like it was all pretty dark. A lot of it was because Bennett sets a tone, and it's not a light, lively, effervescent place to be, but I think that's important.

"Everyone took it very seriously. Added to that were the people that were there. Mark was there, and Dave's widow was there, for a time.

"They were being very generous, and I think we all felt a responsibility to them, to be as honest as we could to the story and to stay in it. It wasn't fun."

Foxcatcher is based on a true story and marks the return of Bennett Miller to the director's chair. The movie has already got the critics raving and is expected to be a major awards contender come the beginning of next year.

Ever since the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back May, Carell has been tipped to pick up his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance as du Pont in the film.

Miller has been behind films such as Capote and Moneyball during his directing career, but this is the first time that he has teamed up with Carell, Tatum and Ruffalo.

Foxcatcher is released 9th January 2015.
