Roberto Orci has revealed that the third Star Trek movie is going to be set in deep space.
Orci has taken over the director's chair from J.J. Abrams, in what will be his big screen directorial debut.
The director also admits that the characters are closer to those in the original series then they were in the previous two films.
Speaking to the Humans From Earth podcast, the director said: "In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story.
"It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.
"So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban are all expected to return to the franchise, We do not yet know which villain the cast of the Enterprise will come face to face with this time around.
Star Trek was rebooted back in 2009, while Star Trek Into Darkness was released last year.
Abrams was in the director's chair for the first two films, but has had to leave the third because of his commitments to Star Wars: Episode VII.
Star Trek 3 is set to hit the big screen in 2016.
