Jake Gyllenhaal has undergone an incredible physical transformation for his new movie Southpaw as he took on the role of boxer Billy Hope.

Southpaw

Southpaw sees Gyllenhaal team up with director Antoine Fuqua for the first time and the director went on the tough physical journey with the actor as they both trained together.

Gyllenhaal did his boxing twice a day, every day, as he got into physical shape and learnt how to fight for the boxing scenes in the film.

In this new featurette we see the regime that Gyllenhaal went on to get ready for the role of Billy Hope:

Southpaw is already being met with acclaim from the critics - as is Gyllenhaal's central performance as Billy. This is the first time that we have seen Fuqua in the director's chair since The Equalizer last year.

A great cast has been assembled for the film, as Gyllenhaal is joined by Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris, Rita Ora, Oona Laurence, and 50 Cent.

Southpaw tells the riveting story of Billy "The Great" Hope, reigning Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World (Gyllenhaal). Billy Hope seemingly has it all with an impressive career, a beautiful and loving wife (McAdams), an adorable daughter (Laurence) and a lavish lifestyle.

When tragedy strikes and his lifelong manager and friend (50 Cent) leaves him behind, Hope hits rock bottom and turns to an unlikely saviour at a run-down local gym: Tick Willis (Whitaker), a retired fighter and trainer to the city's toughest amateur boxers. With his future riding on Tick's guidance and tenacity, Billy enters the hardest battle of his life as he struggles with redemption and to win back the trust of those he loves.

Southpaw looks set to be one of the best boxing movies in recent years and is a hard-hitting drama that is not to be missed this summer.

Southpaw is released 24th July.
