After the box office success of Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the studio has recently revealed that a third movie will be added to the Venom franchise.
Venom was released in 2018, and didn’t seem to do too well with fans, despite an audience score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes (critics gave it 30%).
However, it seems that people enjoyed it enough to warrant a second movie, which released last year (2021) titled Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which did marginally better with audiences (84% on Rotten Tomatoes) and substantially better with critics (59% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Tom Hardy portrayed Eddie Brock in the franchise, and will seemingly continue to do so as the series moves forward. Fans enjoyed Hardy’s depiction of Brock, which no doubt led to a second, and now a third movie.
Let There Be Carnage paved the way for a third film, especially since Hardy’s Brock spent a brief time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a post-credit scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
This means that both Venom and Brock returned to their own universe with knowledge of the Webbed Wonder, but also with a sense of familiarity towards Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
During the current CinemaCon, (which runs from April 25th, 2022, to April 28th, 2022), Sony ended their session by showing a brief highlight reel of upcoming projects.
It was during this section of the presentation that saw Sony officially announce Venom 3. No cast members (other than Hardy), directors, writers or anyone else is attached to the sequel at this time, but news could surface at any time.
Sony’s announcement adds to their plans to build upon their Spider-Man Universe, which continue next year (2023) with Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web set to release.
With this news only just being announced, production will hopefully get underway rather soon, and cast members and a plot may be announced.
It is likely that 2024 will be home to this upcoming sequel, but only time will tell when Venom 3 will release.
