At last night’s (December 9th, 2021) Game Awards, the first official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was revealed, showcasing some of the action, drama and chaos that the titular hero will be finding himself caught up in the middle of, following the events of the original movie.
Having escaped the mushroom land in which he was banished to, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is out for revenge, hoping to claim Sonic’s (Ben Schwartz) power for himself so he can rule over civilisations and destroy those that do not comply. This time however, he’s got his own ally by his side; Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba).
Forced to look in new directions for help saving the planet, Sonic teams up with Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) in an attempt to stop Dr. Robotnik from getting his hands on an emerald that will allow him to live out his dictatorial fantasies once and for all. To do so, he and his new companion will have to go on a globe-trotting journey that will shape their future and change the path they’re on forever.
James Marsden also returns to the cast as reluctant friend to Sonic, Tom Wachowski, alongside Tika Sumpter as Tom’s wife Maddie Wachowski, Natasha Rothwell as Maddie’s sister Rachel and, Adam Pally as Tom's best friend and Green Hills police officer, Wade Whipple.
Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes from a screenplay written by John Whittington, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, adapted from a story by Casey and Miller.
After a controversial first trailer for the original movie, Sonic the Hedgehog was pushed back but eventually made its way to the big screen where it delighted fans of the video game franchise.
In a world where video game adaptations are usually left in the dirt after failing to hit the mark, Sonic was a welcome relief and a light source of genuinely funny moments, heart and adventure.
Carrey in particular was given the opportunity to relive some of his best days on screen, delivering a performance that was comical and outlandish; exactly what audiences expected from the eccentric Dr. Robotnik.
With the bar set high, we’re excited to see if the sequel can live up to expectations.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to come to cinemas across the UK on April 8th, 2022.
