Everybody's favourite hedgehog is back for another big screen live-adaptation, in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Whilst it looked as though Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his new bestie Tom (James Marsden) had banished the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) for good after a long and desperate battle, the power-hungry Big Bad is back, with a new partner - Knuckles the echidna (Idris Elba).
Directed by Jeff Fowler from a screenplay by John Whittington, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the movie sees Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles searching for an emerald that has the ability to wipe out entire civilisations, so it's left up to Sonic and new friend Tails (Colleen O'Shuaghnessey) to get their hands on the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Lee Majdoub all return to the cast, alongside new addition Shemar Moore.
I was a huge fan of the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie. After they, thankfully, redesigned the iconic hedgehog following backlash following the original trailer's release, he looks as good as anybody could imagine. Combining that with a genuinely entertaining story and fittingly over-the-top performance from Carrey, meant that the film was a huge success.
Funnily enough, a few frames in this final trailer actually poke fun at the original design. If you pause the teaser at just the right time, you'll see the below, including Elba with Knuckles' gloves on, and the original Sonic art.
It was just a matter of time before a sequel was confirmed and, thankfully, it looks as though it's going to be just as entertaining as the first. With a third film and spin-off also in the works, I'm excited to enjoy every little slice of Sonic content heading our way in the years to come.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits cinemas across the UK and Ireland on April 1st, 2022.
