Sofia Coppola is set to direct a live action remake of The Little Mermaid.
According to Deadline.com, the Oscar nominated filmmaker is currently in talks for the project; which is based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale.
It seems that Coppola will stick closely to the original tragic fairy tale, which will sees the broken-hearted Little Mermaid commit suicide after the Prince marries another woman.
Kelly Marcel and Abi Morgan wrote the original screenplay, but that has been reworked by Caroline Thompson.
Coppola is not the first big named director linked to the film, as Joe Wright was expected to helm at one point.
The Little Mermaid would be the first time that we have seen Coppola in the director's chair since The Bling Ring last year.
No announcements have yet been made about the cast.
