We have seen Disney enjoy huge recent success with the likes of Cinderella, Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland - all of which have raked in the cash at the box office.

Universal have got in on the act with plans to bring The Little Mermaid, which is a Hans Christian Andersen tale to the big screen.

Coppola has been linked with the project for some time but now Deadline is reporting that she has walked away from the project due to creative differences.

The Universal movie is based more on Andersen's original tale rather than the Disney version of the story and has been adapted for the big screen by Caroline Thompson.

This is the second director to walk away from the film, as Coppola was brought in to replace Joe Wright - who has since gone on to direct Pan.

So the search for a new director is now underway and the studio are yet to reveal who will be taking on the central role of Ariel.

As for Coppola, we have not seen her in the director's chair since The Bling Ring back in 2013 but she is set to start work on A Very Murray Christmas.

The movie is currently in pre-production and will see her reunite with actor Bill Murray in what will be their first project together since Lost In Translation.

A Very Murray Christmas is set to hit the big screen in the U.S. this December.
