Simon Kinberg has explained why the already hugely anticipated Gambit solo film has hit so many setbacks.
The producer revealed that they need to find a 'special' and 'unique' tone for this film and this process cannot be rushed. He compared Gambit to the recently released Deadpool, which was a film that was in development for a decade.
However, despite the string of delays, the producer believes that they are now 'really close' to finishing a screenplay that is 'worthy.'#
Speaking to /Film about the Gambit solo film, Kinberg said: "I think the truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone," said Kinberg.
"Deadpool feels like it exploded out of nowhere but it was a ten-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those ten years. I hope that Gambit doesn't take ten years but it takes a little honing to get that tone and that voice exactly right.
"The character has such a specific voice in the comic in the same way that Deadpool has a specific voice in the comic, that we want to make sure that we capture that voice on the page.
"Really it's just about getting a screenplay that is worthy of that character and I think we're really close right now."
Channing Tatum has been cast in the central role of Gambit and has been linked to the film project for quite some time. He is the only official member of the cast list at this time.
The film was originally scheduled to hit the big screen in October this year but has faced several problems along the way.
Rupert Wyatt was originally hired to direct but was forced to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. Doug Liman is now aboard and we haven't seen him in the director's chair since Edge of Tomorrow.
While the film doesn't have an official release date filming could get underway as early as the beginning of 2017.
