Simmons - who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the movie in 2015 - is set to portray Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming superhero film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

By signing up to for Zack Snyder's motion picture, the 61-year-old star will follow in the footsteps of some big names who have portrayed the role before, including Gary Oldman who played the part in Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' film series.

Simmons is no stranger to starring in a superhero movie having previously appeared as Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi 'Spider-Man' movies, meaning he has now switched sides from Marvel to DC Comics.

The actor will team up with Ben Affleck, who will play Batman in 'Justice League', as well as Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman) and Ezra Miller (The Flash).

Commissioner Gordon was Batman's first ally and helps him with a war on crime in Gotham City.

The character has also been portrayed by Neil Hamilton in 1966's 'Batman: The Movie' and Pat Hingle in the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batman movie adaptations including '90s motion pictures, 'Batman Returns', 'Batman Forever' and 'Batman and Robin'.

'Justice League: Part One' is set to be released in November 2017, followed by 'Justice League: Part Two' in June 2019.
