Russell Crowe says he was expecting controversy with Noah, but has been surprised by the volume of it.

Crowe returns to the big screen on Friday to play the title role in the latest film from director Darren Aronofsky.

The movie has been banned in a string of countries, including Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and the Middle East.

Speaking on the red carpet last night, the actor said: "I think when you go to a movie like this you understand that there is going to be a lot of ... controversy.

"I was surprised by the volume of it. Because you are talking about people, who by and large, are making comments based on their imagination of what it might be in a movie that they haven't seen. So it's like, 'what'?!"

The movie is set to follow the story of Noah, as he builds the ark to avoid the great flood that God predicts is coming. However, some religious leaders have criticised the film for inaccuracies.

Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone and Douglas Booth all star in the film, and joined Crowe on the red carpet in London last night.

Noah is released 4th April.
