J.J. Abrams has revealed that the role of Chekov will not be recast following Anton Yelchin's tragic death.
Yelchin has played Chekov since the start of the Star Trek reboot in 2009 and will be seen on the big screen this weekend in Star Trek Beyond.
It was announced earlier this week that a fourth Star Trek movie is in the pipeline, but we will not be seeing another actor take on the role of Chekov.
Speaking to Postmedia Network, Abrams said: "I would say there's no replacing him. There's no recasting. I can't possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."
Yelchin died earlier this year in a freak accident at his home, he was just twenty-seven years old.
Star Trek Beyond will be the first time that we have seen the actor on the big screen since Green Room earlier this year.
This will not be his final film role as he has already completed work on Rememory, We Don't Belong Here, and Porto.
As for Star Trek Beyond, it is the third film in the new Star Trek franchise and sees Justin Lin in the director's chair for the for the first time.
Abrams directed the first two films and has served as the producer this time around.
Yelchin is not the only familiar face on the cast list, as Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Simon Pegg are also back.
Star Trek Beyond is released 22nd July.
