De Niro is interested in taking on the project, which follows a young boy who loves his grandfather but after the older man is widowed and moves in and takes his room, he plots a number of pranks to get rid of him.

Tim Hill is set to direct the movie, which is based on Robert Kimmel Smith's 1984 book.

Phillip Glasser, Marvin Peart and Rose Morris Peart will produce with Jane Rosenthal and Barry Welsh as executive producers.

Lisa Addario and Joey Syracuse have written the first draft while Matt Ember and Tom Astle are currently "polishing" the script, according to Variety.

If De Niro takes on 'The War With Grandpa', he is set to film the movie before working on Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman,' which he will also produce.

The long-awaited project, based on the book 'I Heard You Paint Houses', tells the story of a Mob hitman and will reunite De Niro and director Scorsese for the first time since 'Casino', 20 years ago.

Al Pacino and Joe Pesci have also been tipped to star and last year, Robert said the movie should start filming in 2016.

He said: "We are doing it... We should be doing it sometime next year. We're slowly, slowly getting it in place."
