The 72-year-old American actor, who worked with the late film director on the Vietnam war film 'The Deer Hunter' in 1979, will "always" remember the Oscar-winning creative mastermind who died aged 77 at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday (02.07.16).

Speaking to The Mirror online about Cimino, he said: "Our work together is something I will always remember. He will be missed."

The news of Cimino's death was confirmed by his former lawyer Eric Weissmann, after the screenwriter's friends grew concerned about their pal who had not been in contact and discovered him dead when they went to check in on him.

However, the screenwriter's cause of death has yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, other stars have taken to social media to remember the movie legend and his bravery to create iconic hit productions.

The 'Singer's Public Access' screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, 48, tweeted: "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Deer Hunter And yes... Heaven's Gate - Michael Cimino May the rest of us do half as well. (sic)."

Whilst Jason Reitman wrote: "Heavens Gate was the bravest swing for the fences. May we all be that bold when we turn on the camera. #MichaelCimino (sic)."

And 'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' actor Paul Rust, 35, said: "RIP Michael Cimino. Many fond memories of watching "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" with my dad on TBS on Sunday mornings. (sic)."

Meanwhile, De Niro is in talks to star in 'The War With Grandpa', which follows a young boy who loves his grandfather but after the older man is widowed and moves in and takes his room, he plots a number of pranks to get rid of him.

Tim Hill is set to direct the movie, which is based on Robert Kimmel Smith's 1984 book, whilst Phillip Glasser, Marvin Peart and Rose Morris Peart will co-produce alongside executive producers Jane Rosenthal and Barry Welsh.
