Robert Downey Jr has described himself as the 'old guard' in Captain America: Civil War.
Downey Jr is set to reprise the role as Iron Man in the highly anticipated third solo Captain America film - he will be stepping into the franchise for the first time with this latest movie.
The actor will be a part of a large and very exciting cast list as we see new and old faces on board this latest Marvel film. And Downey Jr admits that there were a lot of new characters and younger faces on the set.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor said: "[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, 'Wow, dude, look at this.' We're now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon].
"But we're also looking around like, 'Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man?' I mean it's like wow, this thing is just crazy."
Iron Man is set to go head to head with Captain America in Civil War as the Avengers become divided. This is the first time that we have seen Downey Jr take on the role of Iron Man since the success of Avengers: Age of Ultron earlier this year - which went on to gross over $1 billion at the global box office.
Chris Evans is back as Captain America, while Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sebastian Stan are back as Black Widow, Falcon, Hawkeye, The Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier.
We are also going to get our first glimpse of Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.
Civil War sees Anthony and Joe Russo back in the director's chair for their second Captain America film and this will be the first time that Downey Jr has teamed up with the filmmaking siblings. There have also been rumours swirling that we may see Iron Man and Captain America make an appearance in the upcoming solo Spider-Man film, which is due to hit the big screen in 2017.
As for Downey Jr, Captain America: Civil War will be his first film of 2016 and a third Sherlock Holmes movie could well be in the pipeline.
Captain America: Civil War is released 29th April 2016.
