Marshall was nervous about helming the big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's award-winning musical because he had a lot to live up to, so was thrilled with the reception the film - which starred the likes of Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Johnny Depp - received.
Quizzed on how he'd felt over the reviews, he said: "A bit relieved. It's always tricky with a musical and bringing it to the screen because you don't know what the appetite will be around the world and on top of that you have the Sondheim factor."
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' filmmaker admits he was also anxious about living up to Sondheim's expectations as he wanted the film to live up to the success of the stage show.
He explained: "He is challenging and yet ... I don't know if it's a challenge but it's certainly something you reach for and I think that Sondheim really raises a bar and I felt that when we were doing this we weren't seeing the lowest common denominator, we were really reaching for something that will touch that many people and that's way more rewarding for me and this group we got together."
