Richard Armitage has described his character in Into The Storm as a 'normal guy' who is called upon to become a hero.
Armitage is back on the big screen this summer as he leads the cast in new disaster film Into The Storm, which sees Steven Quale return to the director's chair.
Armitage takes on the role of school teacher Gary Morris, who battles to save his sons from the storm.
Speaking to Collider, the actor said: "I looked mainly at the idea of a guy who is a normal guy and every man who is forced into a situation where he has to become heroic for a day to save his sons.
"And he has to effectively do that thing that we all hope have in us which is to run into a burning building and save a child, to dive into water to save a child. But nobody knows if we have the potential until you’re faced with that situation.
"And before you realize you’re becoming a hero, it’s already happened. And this is all in a space of a day so that’s really the centre of my character. He’s a very normal, ordinary guy who gets called upon to be a hero."
Armitage is part of an all-star cast as Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeremy Sumpter and Nathan Kress are all on board.
Into The Storm is the first film for Armitage since the success of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at the end of last year.
He will be returning to the role of Thorin later this year, with The Battle of the Five Armies.
Into The Storm is released 20th August.
