Jackson is currently enjoying huge success with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which sees him leave Middle Earth for the final time after six huge movies over the last decade.

Jackson says that industry has become very franchise and superhero driven and he now wants to go and make a 'small New Zealand movie.'

Speaking to Moviefone, the filmmaker said: "I don't really like the Hollywood blockbuster bandwagon that exists right now. The industry - and the advent of all the technology - has kind of lost its way. It's become very franchise-driven and superhero-driven.

"I've never read a comic book in my life, so I'm immediately at a disadvantage and I have no interest in that. So now it's time for us to step back. We're heading towards something of that scale.

"So, yes, I'm not going to head off and do a Marvel film. So if I don't do a Marvel film, I don't have any other choice - I've got to go and make a small New Zealand movie!"

The Battle of the Five Armies is the third and final movie in Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy - the movie has already topped the U.S. and Uk box office and is performing well worldwide.

While Jackson is looking to work on a smaller movie, he is also set to return to the director's chair for The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun, which will come after the success of The Adventures of Tintin back in 2011.

The Tintin movies were a joint project between Jackson and Steven Spielberg, and will see Jackson replace Spielberg in the director's chair.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is out now.
