There's a huge twist in this year's Pet Sematary cinematic release, in that the death of one major character has been changed.
Co-director Dennis Widmyer says that it was something already in the script when he came on board, and describes it as "one of the smartest things" about the new movie.
"It was new and fresh but also absolutely kept the essence of the novel," he explained.
Widmyer continued: "One of the things we liked about the novel is that it’s always the character of Ellie who is asking about these things. She’s asking about her cat dying one day and asking all these big questions. So, it felt right for it to be her, to echo these questions to her Dad, to resolve these earlier conversations that we’ve had. It felt like a nice way to connect that theme."
Based of course on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows the story of Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) who relocates with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young chilren from Boston to rural Maine.
Whilst there, they discover a burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home, and it doesn't take long before tragedy strikes. Turning to his unusual neighbour Jud (John Lithgow) for help, what follows is a dangerous chain reaction that unleashes evil on the family and all who are near them.
Though the film looks set to stay faithful to the original novel in many regards, we wouldn't be surprised to see more unexpected twists and turns along the way when the movie does eventually hit the big screen.
Pet Sematary comes to cinemas across the UK on April 5, 2019.
