'One Direction: This Is Us' has topped the UK box office, taking £3.5 million.

The 3D documentary movie starring the boy band heartthrobs - Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson - crushed the competition over the weekend to take the top spot, according to official figures.

The Morgan Spurlock-directed film's chart-topping haul includes £1.3 million from preview showings.

While impressive for a musical documentary, 'This Is Us' failed to top the opening of 'Michael Jackson's This Is It', which took £4.9 million in its opening weekend in November 2009 - just months after the iconic singer's death.

Last week's number one, 'Elysium', drops to number two this week, trailing behind 'This Is Us' with £1.2 million grossed between Friday (30.08.13) and Sunday (01.09.13).

The 'Best Song Ever' band are celebrating the success of their movie around the world as the movie topped the US box office also, taking $17 million in ticket sales.

Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures' President of Worldwide Distribution, said: "We are thrilled with our result. It exceeded our expectations not only domestically, but everywhere, worldwide."

'This Is Us' follows the British boy band as they tour the world on their 'Take Me Home' world tour and documents their rise to fame.
