Nicole Kidman wanted to appear in 'Lion' because it is so "powerful and true".
The 49-year-old actress - who has adopted children Isabella, 23, and Connor, 21, with ex-husband Tom Cruise, as well as biological daughters Sunday, seven, and Faith, four, with spouse Keith Urban - plays the adoptive mother of Saroo Brierley (Dev Patel), who was separated from his Indian family, in the real-life tale.
Though her own experiences meant she could relate to her character, she thinks it is a story that can be enjoyed by all.
She said: "Obviously I have adopted children. It takes a village to raise children.
"The power of good love, there's nothing like it, and where it comes from and how you get it. But the nurturing quality of good love is extraordinary.
"The power of somebody wanting to find home, I think, is just a wonderful, cinematic story."
Nicole was joined at the movie's world premiere in Toronto by co-stars Dev and Rooney Mara.
And Rooney was thrilled to be a part of the movie, particularly alongside Dev as she enjoyed seeing the "transformation" he went through while making the movie.
She told the Daily Mail Australia: "He went through such a transformation during this whole process. It was really cool to get to watch that.
"It was such a beautiful story. I couldn't believe it was a true story when I read it. I just wanted to be a part of it.
"It's such an uplifting film about the human spirit and about love and I just wanted to be part of something like that."
'Lion' will premiere in America in November and in Australia in January 2017.
