Nicolas Winding Refn says he is unfazed by the booing that his new movie Only God Forgives received at Cannes because he believes that art is meant to divide.
The movie sees Refn reunite with actor Ryan Gosling for the first time since the pair worked together on the critically acclaimed Drive.
Only God Forgives was screening at Cannes and is in the running for the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the festival.
Speaking to Vulture the director said:
"Oh, cool. I mean, how can I expect someone to not react like this when on one hand you are dropping what you do in everyone's face and at the same time saying, 'Love me, please', you know?
"You're going to get that. You know, great art - horrible thing to say - but art is meant to divide, because if it doesn't divide, it doesn't penetrate, and if it doesn't penetrate, you just consume it."
Refn has also penned the screenplay for Only God Forgives as well as being back in the director’s chair for the movie.
Gosling is joined on the cast list by Kristin Scott Thomas, Yayaying Rhatha Phongam, Tom Burke and Vithaya Pansringarm.
Only God Forgives is released 2nd August.
