Reese Witherspoon is set to return to the big screen in the new year as she takes on the lead character of Wild - which has already been met well on the festival circuit.

Wild

Wild marks the return of Jean-Marc Vallee to the director's chair for the first time since the success of Dallas Buyers Club earlier this year, as he brings the true story of Cheryl Stayed to the big screen.

The movie is based on Strayed's memoir as she set out on a solo 1,100-mile hike to recover from a series of personal problems including drug addiction, the death of her mother, and the collapse of her marriage.

Witherspoon will take on the role of Strayed in the movie as she teamed up with director Vallee for the first time. A brand new clip from the film has been released, and we have it for you to take a look at:

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed (Witherspoon) has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behaviour, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone.

Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

Wild was one of the highlights of the recent BFI London Film Festival, and Witherspoon is being tipped as a possible Oscar contender come the beginning of next year, It would be her first Oscar nomination since she triumphed with Walk the Line.

And we are going to be seeing plenty of her heading into next year, as she has also completed work on Inherent Vice - another movie that is surrounded in Oscar whispers - and Don't Mess With Texas.

The former sees her work with director Paul Thomas Anderson, while Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, and Benicio Del Toro are also on board.

Wild is released 16th January 2015.
