Many horror films coming out are not too different; a killer on the lose or a monster destroying homes... However, upcoming movie Come Play tells a story like no other, and shows technology to be more dangerous than it’s ever been.
Come Play, starring Gillian Jacobs (Community, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Love), John Gallagher Jr. (Underwater, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Short Term 12), and Azhy Robertson (Marriage Story), tells the tale of Larry, a creature who simply wants a friend, and will do anything to get one.
We follow Oliver (Robertson), a lonesome autistic boy who finds a creepy kid’s story on his new tablet. He couldn’t have imagined that simply reading the tale of Larry, a lonely and terrifying monster just as desperate for friends as Oliver, would invite the beast into his home.
As it appears that Larry just wants someone to keep him company, what he wants is far more sinister and dangerous than anyone could have thought...
The trailer for Come Play is brilliant, as Oliver is teased and questioned at school when he uses his phone in class; it allows him to speak his mind easier, which means he can contribute more to class.
Oliver is autistic, which plays well within this horror movie, as his unfortunate inability to speak paves the way for silence, which is never good in a setting such as this one.
We see Oliver and some boys from his class, who seem to still be teasing him, stay at his house for a sleepover. They take his tablet and find the story about Larry, and as one boy reads the tale out loud, he unknowingly releases Larry into Oliver’s home.
The trailer shows us snippets of Larry, an unnervingly tall and pale being, with crimson eyes that look hollow and dead. Larry appears to be a true figure of horror; with the way he walks and the sounds his bones make when he manoeuvres towards Oliver and his equally terrified mother.
Come Play looks to be an exciting and genuinely scary entry into the realm of horrors, and will be a wonderfully terrifying experience that viewers can check out once the movie releases.
The film is Jacob Chase’s directorial debut, and from the trailer alone it looks to be a haunting success.
Come Play will be available for digital download from September 13th, 2021.
