Carol whipped up a frenzy in London last night as it screened as part of the BFI London Film Festival and the brand new poster has been unveiled.

Cate Blanchett was on the red carpet to promote the film and could find herself in the Oscar race once again as she continues to receive critical acclaim for her central performance.

Carol is the first time that we have seen Blanchett on the big screen since the success of Cinderella at the beginning of the year and is based on the Patricia Highsmith novel.

The movie marks the return of Todd Haynes to the director's chair as he reunites with Blanchett for the first time since I'm Not There; this is also Haynes' first feature since the Bob Dylan inspired movie.

Rooney Mara joins Blanchett on the cast list and the duo have been winning over audiences and critics in every festival the film has been screening; expect Mara to also be in the Oscar mix when the nominations are announced next year.

This would be a second Oscar nod for Mara, having picked up a Best Actress nomination for her performance in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It was 2014 when Blanchett finally got her hands on the Best Actress Oscar, winning for her performance in Blue Jasmine. She has also won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in The Aviator back in 2005.

However, it is not all about Blanchett and Mara as the pair are joined on the cast list by Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy, and Cory Michael Smith.

A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol's involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.

Carol is released 27th November.
