Neill Blomkamp says that his new Alien film will be a 'genetic sibling' the films that have gone before.
It was revealed earlier this month that Blomkamp was indeed on board a new Alien film - rumours had been circulating for some time about his involvement - and the director revealed that the new film would continue on from Aliens, which was released back in 1986.
Speaking to Sky News, the director said: "I want this film to feel like it's literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So it's Alien, Aliens, and then this movie."Just what the plot is remains a closely guarded secret but Blomkamp says that his interest in directing a new Alien film was sparked by working with Sigourney Weaver on his latest film Chappie.
Blomkamp continued: "Speaking to Sigourney Weaver, when we were doing Chappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head - I had come up with an idea that didn't have Sigourney, it was a different idea. But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy s***, that could actually be really interesting.
"When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn't needed in the edit, I could think about Alien."
Blomkamp will be back with Chappie - which is his third sci-fi film - at the beginning of March, which comes after the success of District 9 and Elysium.
Chappie saw the filmmaker team up with Weaver for the first time, while, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, and Sharlto Copley are all also on board. Chappie will mark the third time that Blomkamp has worked with Copley, after the pair teamed up for District 9 and Elysium; it was the former that really sent both the director and the actor's star rocketing.
There is no casting news for the new Alien film but it is expected to hit the big screen in 2017.
