Neil Burger has revealed that he decided not to return to direct Insurgent because he couldn’t film Divergent and prep for the sequel at the same time.
It was announced earlier this year that Robert Schwentke will take over the director’s chair for the second movie Insurgent.
And Burger admits that he is sad that he will not be retuning to helm the sequel in this trilogy of movies.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director said: "Once I was doing that, I was like, 'I can't be prepping one shoot on this film and then prepping a whole other movie at the same time', and it was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back in the sense of being able to do [Insurgent].
"It's too bad because I love those actors and I do feel a certain ownership of the movie."
Burger may not be in the director’s chair for Insurgent, but he will still be involved in the franchise as an executive producer.
Divergent is one of the most anticipated films of the year as the first book in the Veronica Roth series is adapted for the big screen; it is the latest young adult novel to get a movie makeover.
Shailene Woodley will take on the central role of Tris Prior, while Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney and Zoe Kravitz are just some of the other names involved.
Divergent is released 4th April.
