As lockdown eases and cinemas prepare to open on May 17th 2021 (in the UK), fans are getting more excited than ever to not watch new movies at home anymore.
So, we have gathered some news stories for you and put them all in one place, in order for you to get even more hyped about going to the cinema after so long!
New Transformers film casts Dominique Fishback in lead role
The Transformers franchise began all the way back in 2007, led by actor Shia LeBeouf. After his third movie however, it seemed things were heading downhill for the film series.
After the soft reboot Bumblebee in 2018 that had moderate success, the franchise has been at a standstill while Paramount decided what to do next.
However, talks of a new film are taking place and it seems the plans are set in stone for a new addition to the series. Star of Judas and the Black Messiah Dominique Fishback has been cast in the lead role for the new movie.
Hamilton star Anthony Ramos was cast a few weeks ago, and in order to get this project moving and on track for a 2022 release date, Paramount needed to start the casting process.
While there are no details on the film itself, it may be a make or break project for the company as many of the Transformers films are hit or miss.
The Meg 2 will begin filming next year
Popular action star Jason Statham has confirmed that he will be diving into the deep end once again, as he says the sequel to his shark movie The Meg will begin filming in January of 2022.
The film’s official title will be Meg 2: The Trench, and will have Ben Wheatley in the director’s chair.
Based on the novel by Steve Alten, the first feature had mixed reviews but ultimately did rather well during the summer of its release (2018). Alten has teased a darker story and a prospective R-rating, so the sequel may be more action-packed and gorier that the first!
This more gruesome path for Meg 2 may fix some issues fans had with the first movie; it wasn’t quite memorable enough, but nor was it bad enough to avoid recommending it to others. Will the next instalment be more impressive?
The Tomorrow War, starring Chris Pratt, releases teaser trailer
Chris Pratt stars in new Amazon Video movie The Tomorrow War, following his character Dan Forester as he is recruited by soldiers from the future to help fight an extra-terrestrial war.
The film was meant to release late last year (2020), but of course the global pandemic prevented this. Not wanting to risk losing money, Paramount sold the feature to Amazon Prime instead of releasing it in cinemas.
Pratt is of course well-known for playing Peter Quill in the Marvel movies, but his latest venture, despite it also involving aliens, appears to be quite different than anything we’ve seen him do before.
While the teaser doesn’t give much away, it is clear that we are in for a treat as the monsters seem a formidable foe and give us something to be excited for, as we do not yet know what they look like.
The Tomorrow War will be available on Amazon Prime Video on July 2nd 2021!
Escape Room 2 release date has been moved up
As we hear of film after film being pushed back, the sequel to the 2019 psychological thriller Escape Room has actually been moved up by more than a few months.
The original release date for this new horror was January 7th, 2022; now we can expect to see this feature as early as July 16th of this year (2021).
The 2019 film followed a group of strangers who were summoned to try an escape room, with the promise of $10,000 if they won. When they all arrive and begin to chat about what they’re all doing there, the heat is turned up (literally), and they must all fight to survive.
While there is little known about this sequel thus far, we can only hope that it will follow on from the first as we were left with a pretty interesting cliffhanger. Will the film follow the same premise as the first, or will it bring about something new and more terrifying?
Falcon and The Winter Soldier director is open to helm Captain America 4
Kari Skogland, director of the Marvel and Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, has said she would be interested in taking the driver’s seat for the new Captain America feature; starring Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America.
Skogland has had her fingers in a lot of pies, as she’s directed shows such as The Walking Dead, The Punisher, The Handmaid’s Tale and many more. She has clearly done some exceptional work, so for her to helm the next Captain America movie would seem to be the perfect choice.
The director has said she would do anything in the Marvel franchise, so it’s looking very hopeful that she will take the lead for Sam Wilson’s (Mackie) next adventure. Having directed all six episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Skogland would no doubt bring us a perfect action movie, with the correct balance of emotion thrown in.
While it isn’t certain what the new feature will focus on, we can place a decent bet on it having some heavy themes, mixed well with comedy and working Sam perfectly into his new role.
