Despite lockdown still in place for many people, news regarding films is still flooding out.

Check out some of this week’s stories; from new trailers for Mortal Kombat and Cruella, to finding out who has been cast to play Supergirl in the upcoming Flash movie.

Cruella releases its first trailer

Emma Stone has officially been cast as Cruella in Disney’s new live-action movie, seemingly set to follow Cruella on her journey to villainy.

The trailer shows what appears to be an origin story, with Stone adapting to this role remarkably well.

With the cast also including Mark Strong and Emma Thompson, the film may be something to look forward to. However, giving villains their own story in which their evil plans and mindsets are deemed reasonable, defeats the purpose of having a villain in the first place.

The trailer genuinely looks like Disney are attempting to do their own Harley Quinn from DC, or even a Joker-type character. This is very odd for a film like this.

Cruella is set to be released on May 26th 2021, with rumours it will drop on Disney+ just two days later.

Zack Snyder is working on a King Arthur film

While not in the developmental phase yet, Zack Snyder has said that he is working on a ‘faithful’ retelling of King Arthur’s story.

Following Snyder’s tragic loss of his daughter back in 2017, he was no longer able to work on Justice League, and we can probably all agree that the film was worse off because of this.

Nevertheless, Snyder is bouncing back not only with the Snyder cut of Justice League releasing soon, but with this brand-new project.

Many people are questioning, however, how faithful the retelling of an age-old story can be, with thousands of years’ worth of legends and stories.

Snyder is still only in the thinking stage of this idea, so all we can do is sit back and wait for him to tell us more.

Stephen King’s oddest novel gets a reboot

The Running Man is perhaps Stephen King’s oddest novel. The book takes place in a dystopian future where a violent gameshow of the same name gets volunteers who are paid for every hour they remain alive on the show.

Due to the differences between King’s work and the movie that was made in 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, fans of the novel and the film were left feeling nothing less than disappointed.

However, Edgar Wright is here to save the day. The director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz is set to direct a reboot of The Running Man.

Despite no cast being set yet, it has been said that this film will stay much more faithful to the source material.

Mortal Kombat film has released its first trailer

Fans of the Mortal Kombat game franchise will have been delighted when they heard they were getting a new movie.

The trailer is an exciting bloodbath, with characters being revealed and the film looking amazing. From what the trailer shows, all characters we see are pretty game-accurate, at least when we consider the one or two most recent game titles, Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11.

The plot seems to be that a handful of warriors are selected to battle in Mortal Kombat, a legendary fight which will save the realm. In the trailer, we see well-known characters such as Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and more.

The film will be released in cinemas (this may change, due to the current pandemic) and on HBO Max on April 16th, 2021.

Supergirl has been cast

Director for The Flash recently announced that Sasha Calle has been cast to play the titular role of Supergirl in the upcoming Flash movie.

In the comics, and many other comics at similar times, many if not all characters were white. Now, Calle is getting the wonderful chance to represent Supergirl as Latina.

The film will still be working with Ezra Miller, who played The Flash in the 2017 film Justice League, despite the controversy surrounding the actor in regard to when he aggressively put his hands on a fan.

It was previously announced that Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman for the movie, alongside Michael Keaton doing the same from his 1989 film.

This potentially sets up a multiverse plot line, similar to the one the Marvel Cinematic Universe is diving into in the next phase of movies. 

The movie is currently scheduled to arrive in 2022 – but of course, this is subject to change.
