This summer, cinemas across the globe will play host to one of the most chaotic, yet compelling origin stories (and movies, period) of all time, as Minions: The Rise of Gru makes its debut.

As a 12-year-old youngster in 1970s suburbia, Gru (Steve Carell) is already plotting to take over the world. Though he has big ideas, it's not exactly going well, so when he meets a bunch of Minions, including the much-loved Kevin, Stuart and Bob alongside new Minion Bob, they join forces in an unexpected show of unity.

Building their first lair, designing their weapons and hoping to finally execute some dastardly missions successfully, their expectations only grow and, when the supervillain supergroup the Vicious 6 oust their leader, Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), fanboy Gru interviews to be their new recruit.

Unimpressed by the wannabe villain, Gru actually gets one over on the group, leaving them furious and marking him as their number one enemy. Now on the run, Gru and the Minions must work harder than ever before if they hope to survive.

Alongside Carell and Arkin, Russell Brand stars as a young Dr. Nefario, with Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow and, legendary actress Julie Andrews as Gru's self-absorbed mother.

The Vicious 6 meanwhile is made up of an incredible cast, including Taraji P. Henson as leader Belle Bottom; Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed; Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck; Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance and; Danny Trejo as Stronghold.

With such a strong cast and, incredible foundations to build upon, it’s unlikely that Illumination and Universal Pictures are going to do anything less than hit this one out of the park.

This new trailer is hilarious from start to finish; it’s hard not to find humour in the ridiculousness of the Minions and their silly antics. Exactly why they’ve been allowed to take over a plane is anybody’s guess, but it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch, of that we can be sure.

Despite being the main focus of the title and this being sold to us as an origin story, Gru himself actually hardly appears in this teaser. Hopefully, he gets a little more screen time when the movie’s release does come around!
