Michael Shannon says that taking on dark characters can be a 'troubling' experience.
The actor will be back on the big screen this week to tell the story of contract killer Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman.
And while Shannon says that he does find these characters interesting it tends not to be a fun experience.
Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "It's certainly not fun, it's not a happy-go-lucky experience. It's troubling.
"Any time I take a job, I'm not afraid to dig into something, no matter how ugly it may be. Those, unfortunately for better or for worse, tend to be the most interesting stories. People are fascinated by them."
The Iceman is a big screen adaptation of the novel of the same name and sees Ariel Vromen in the director's chair.
Kuklinski is believed to have been responsible for over a hundred murders and yet when he was arrested in 1986 his wife and daughter had no clue about what he did.
June is set to be a busy month for Shannon as we are also going to be seeing him take on the role of General Zod in Man of Steel.
The Iceman is released June 7th.
